Is the VCP5-DCV certification still valid?
No. The VCP550 exam retired on March 31, 2017, and the VMware Certified Professional 5 - Data Center Virtualization (VCP5-DCV) certification retired on the same date. Broadcom, which acquired VMware in 2023, lists VCP6-DCV as the official replacement. However, VCP6-DCV is also retired: its exams, 2V0-621 and 2V0-621D, retired on August 30, 2019. A VCP5-DCV holder therefore sits two generations behind a certification track that has since been rebuilt entirely around VMware Cloud Foundation.
What VCP550 Actually Was
VCP550 was the exam that certified VMware Certified Professional 5 - Data Center Virtualization on vSphere 5.5. It sat at the professional tier of VMware’s certification ladder, above the associate-level VCA credentials and below the advanced VCAP and expert VCDX tiers.
The exam existed alongside a close sibling. VCP510 covered vSphere 5.0 and 5.1 and retired earlier, on November 30, 2015. VCP550 covered the 5.5 release. A delta variant, VCP550D, existed for candidates recertifying from an earlier VCP5 credential rather than sitting the full exam; it retired on the same day as VCP550.
The subject matter was the vSphere 5.5 platform as it was actually deployed in 2014: ESXi host installation and configuration, vCenter Server deployment, virtual networking through standard and distributed switches, storage configuration across VMFS and NFS, resource management with clusters and resource pools, high availability, vMotion and Storage vMotion, and backup and recovery.
This was a hands-on administration credential. It certified that you could run a vSphere environment, not that you could design one, which is what separated it from VCAP5-DCD.
Why This Certification Went Away
Three things happened in sequence, and understanding them explains why the gap between a VCP5-DCV and the current program is wider than the version numbers suggest.
VMware retired the exam on schedule. VCP550 retired March 31, 2017, roughly in line with the vSphere 5.5 product lifecycle. The credential it earned retired the same day. This was routine: VMware regularly retired professional-tier credentials as major vSphere versions aged out.
The named replacement then retired too. Broadcom’s official retirement documentation names VCP6-DCV as the replacement for VCP5-DCV. But the VCP6-DCV exams, 2V0-620 and 2V0-621, retired on August 30, 2019. Anyone who followed the official upgrade path in 2017 found that credential retired within two years.
Broadcom rebuilt the program. After acquiring VMware in 2023, Broadcom restructured the certification program around two product lines, vSphere Foundation and Cloud Foundation, and split credentials by job function rather than by technology. The current professional-tier data center credential is not a renamed VCP6-DCV. It is a different certification covering a different product.
The practical consequence: there is no upgrade path. A VCP5-DCV does not convert, transfer, or shorten the requirements for any currently attainable VMware credential.
What VCP5-DCV Is Worth on a CV Today
Be direct about this, because vagueness here wastes people’s time.
As a current credential, it is worth nothing. It cannot be verified as active, it does not satisfy any partner-program requirement, and no employer checking credentials will find it valid. Listing it under a “Certifications” heading without qualification reads as either dishonest or out of touch.
As evidence of experience, it is worth something real. Someone who passed VCP550 in 2014 or later demonstrably administered production vSphere. That experience did not evaporate when the credential expired. ESXi, vCenter, vMotion, HA, DRS, and datastore management are still the foundation of the platform. An engineer who genuinely knew vSphere 5.5 is not starting from zero on VCF; they are updating a working mental model.
The distinction matters for how you present it. “VCP5-DCV (VMware Certified Professional, vSphere 5.5), 2014, retired” in a Certifications section is accurate and unembarrassing. Better, in most cases, is to move it into an experience bullet: “Administered production vSphere 5.5 environments; VCP5-DCV certified 2014.” That puts the emphasis on the work rather than on a credential that no longer verifies.
What you should not do is list it as though it were current. Hiring managers in virtualization know the VCP retirement schedule. An unqualified VCP5-DCV on a 2026 CV signals that the candidate has not engaged with the platform in roughly a decade, which may be untrue and is an avoidable impression.
The Skills That Transferred and the Ones That Did Not

The core hypervisor model is unchanged. ESXi still runs virtual machines on bare metal, vCenter still provides centralized management, and the fundamental operations of provisioning, snapshotting, migrating, and monitoring VMs work on the same concepts. vMotion still moves running workloads between hosts. HA still restarts VMs after host failure. DRS still balances load across a cluster. Someone who understood why a vMotion fails, or how an HA admission control policy constrains capacity, understands those things today.
Storage fundamentals largely carried over. VMFS, NFS datastores, multipathing, and thin provisioning behave recognizably.
Substantially changed:
Networking is the largest divergence. VCP550 taught standard and distributed virtual switches. NSX and software-defined networking now occupy a large part of the platform’s networking story, and the current administrator credential expects familiarity with NSX as a component of VCF.
Storage architecture shifted with vSAN. VCP550-era storage assumed external arrays presented over FC, iSCSI, or NFS. vSAN’s hyperconverged model, where cluster-local disks form a distributed datastore, is now core to VCF deployments and was peripheral in 2014.
Entirely new:
Kubernetes. The current VCF Administrator exam guide states the candidate should have foundational knowledge of Kubernetes, and lists vSphere Supervisor among the components. Container orchestration did not appear on VCP550 in any form.
The VCF operational tooling, VCF Automation, VCF Operations, VCF Operations for Logs, VCF Fleet Management, VCF Operations for Networks, and VCF Operations HCX, is a management layer that did not exist in the 5.5 era.
Identity and lifecycle management through VCF Identity Broker and Fleet Management represent an operational model built around fleet-wide lifecycle rather than per-host administration.
Where the Path Actually Leads Now
The current professional-tier credential for someone coming from a data center virtualization background is VMware Certified Professional - VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator (VCP-VCF Administrator), earned through exam 2V0-17.25.
According to Broadcom’s exam guide, last updated April 23, 2026, the exam is 60 items with a passing score of 300 on a scaled method, delivered as a proctored exam through Pearson VUE with a 135-minute appointment that includes additional time for non-native English speakers.
The exam guide describes the minimally qualified candidate as someone who can install, configure, manage, and perform basic troubleshooting of a VMware Cloud Foundation solution, with knowledge of VCF features, functions, and architecture including vCenter, ESX, vSphere Supervisor, vSAN, NSX, VCF Identity Broker, VCF Automation, VCF Operations, VCF Operations for Logs, VCF Fleet Management, VCF Operations for Networks, and VCF Operations HCX. It specifies a minimum of one year of IT experience and foundational knowledge of Kubernetes alongside general enterprise IT topics including hardware, storage, networking, DNS, NTP, and certificates.
Note what that list implies for a returning VCP5-DCV holder. Of the components named, vCenter and ESX are familiar. vSAN and NSX are probably known by name but likely not to exam depth. vSphere Supervisor and the entire VCF Operations family are new.
Broadcom’s current program also includes a vSphere Foundation track alongside Cloud Foundation, and splits credentials by job function, with administrator, architect, and support variants. Secondary sources report exam codes including 2V0-16.25 for VCP-VVF Administrator, 2V0-13.25 for VCP-VCF Architect, 2V0-18.25 for VCP-VVF Support, and 2V0-15.25 for VCP-VCF Support. Confirm current codes and requirements against Broadcom’s certification site before booking, since the program has changed repeatedly since 2023.
A Realistic Return Plan
If you held VCP5-DCV and want a current credential, the sequence that wastes least time:
Audit the gap honestly. The delta is not “vSphere 5.5 to vSphere 8.” It is “single-cluster vSphere administration to VCF fleet operations.” Read the current exam guide’s component list and mark each item as known, half-known, or new. For most returning VCP5-DCV holders the new column contains vSphere Supervisor, the VCF Operations family, Fleet Management, and Identity Broker.
Rebuild hands-on before studying theory. The credential you held was hands-on, and the current one is too. Reading about VCF Operations will not produce the recognition that exam scenarios require. Lab access matters more than a course.
Decide between VVF and VCF deliberately. The program splits by product line. If your environment is vSphere-centric without the full Cloud Foundation stack, the vSphere Foundation track may match your actual work better than Cloud Foundation. Matching the exam to the environment you operate is the difference between studying and cramming.
Do not budget based on the old exam. Pricing, format, and prerequisites have all changed. Verify current cost and any training requirement directly with Broadcom.
What to Do If You Are Not Returning to VMware
Many VCP5-DCV holders moved to cloud platforms after 2017, and for a large share of them recertifying on VCF is the wrong investment.
The honest test is whether you work with on-premises or hybrid VMware infrastructure now, or expect to. If your work is AWS, Azure, or GCP, a current cloud credential from that provider serves you better than a VCF certification you will not use. Virtualization fundamentals from the vSphere era transfer well to cloud infrastructure roles without requiring a VMware credential to prove them.
If you work in a hybrid environment where VCF sits alongside public cloud, the VCF administrator credential has direct value, particularly given how much VMware licensing and architecture changed after the Broadcom acquisition. Organizations navigating that transition value people who understand the platform.
